Schools of the Future

Schools of the Future
By: Ben Orki - Ode issue:5

The article cleverly illustrates that humans only learn the necessities for survival on earth. They attend universities only to learn the basic skills for the workplace. Universities fail to teach what is truly crucial to life. That is self-discovery. Individuals need to understand who they are, what they are living for and the true definition of life. Page two of the article states that "discipline, hard work, rationality, calculation can get us only so far." These tools are indeed helpful for survival in our world, but we need to learn the science of intuition. Ben Orki's article was certainly an eye-opener. It made me question the true reasons for which I attend school and what I have truly learned by going to school. School has taught me a lot over the pass years, but it has definitely not been able to teach me the true meaning of life. However, I have learned how to survive in the workplace. It is sad that individuals only live to work. Everything revolves around money and how to get more. This was definitely an inspirational article which made me view learning in a new light.

hi Shivanna! I certainly agree with you when you mention that is sad that life revolves around money. I think that we have created a world like that. Now let me ask you? Have you had any field experiences? In the classroom teachers tell you what to do. In the field it is way different. The different situations that you will have in you life or your career can be taught in school but the results will be way different in real life. That is just my way of thinking.

I thought this was a good article becasue there have been times where I wondered how I was going to learn to be an "adult". When I read this article it reminded me of many of the concerns I have about what going to happen when I have to do everything on my own. If there was a University that could teach people the things mentioned in the article it would definitely make life easier. But even though life would be easier, overall we wouldn't learn as much becasue I believe that so much of learning is done through experiences.

I agree with you and the article that colleges today do not teach about real world thinking and without knowing how to see and listen. We leave the school with some knowledge in our field but we don't know how to apply or if what we have learned will still be valid once we graduate. I also agree with the article when it states that the purpose of the academy ought to be to unlesh the bright and sublime possibilities of the human being. Right now we are only being taught what we should think rather than being to how to think and how to function in a complicated world.
