Cultural perspectives

As teachers we are going to come across many multi cultural perspectives. We should understand that certain ethnic groups view education for their children differently. Some cultures don’t put that much emphasis on education. Due to their socioeconomic status they urge their children to work as soon as they can to help the family. Teachers have to remember that some children are not getting the same support at home that they are getting in school. My parents who are from South America, stopped going to school when they were in elementary school so they could help take care of their families. My parents wanted me to do well in elementary school and high school because that was more of an education than they had. They did not put too much emphasis on me to attend college, however they were very supportive when I decided to go. I remember how proud they were when I graduated from college because I was the first person in my family to do so.

I agree that different cultures do not put the same emphasis on education as others. My aunt came to America from another country. She missed countless days of elementary and middle school and had to drop out of school altogether in high school. She never went to collage. This was all because her mother thought it was more important for her to take care of her brothers then to go to school. I had an Chinese afterschooler in my daycare center who worked on his homework until it was all done everyday becuase his parents told him he would never succeed if he didn't do his homework and get good grades. This clearly shows the differences in cultures' emphasis on education.
