Using this course in Junior Field

I wanted to share a story about one of my lessons that I did in Junior Field. We were reading a story called, "Conversational Ballgames," which contrasts the way Western society holds a conversation as opposed to Japanese society. I thought as an anticipatory set we could talk about cultural differences. I used the quiz that we received the first day of class. The students loved to hear about the different customs, and what everyday signs in our culture mean, which are different in other cultures. They were shocked about certain things too, such as how sitting with your legs crossed is an insult in Japanese culture. Some ideas the students did not grasp though, such as how the Japanese do not have formal conversation at dinner. The students were asking me questions like, "Well, if you can't talk at dinner how do you go on a date!?!" I was not prepared to answer these types of questions, but overall it went well. The discussion was fun and it really focused them in on the lesson.

I think that's great that you incorporated that activity into your own lesson. I think that activity is a real "eye opener", because I had no idea about half of those signs either. I think it was a great way to show your students how careful they have to be as well. It shows them just how a simple gesture can offend someone from a different culture. It also teaches them to learn about differences and how to respect one another. I'm glad that it went well also, maybe I'll use that in the classroom as well!
