Schools of the Future

I thought the article on "Schools of the future" by Ben Okri was very inspirational. I think it is true that students are not probed to discovery themselves. They are merely molded into a robot that is capable of carrying out tasks in their professional field once in the workplace.
Everyone has a lot to learn, including our country. It is true that our education is in its infancy, as is our country. We are still one of the youngest countries on the planet.
One reason why I think that education is like this is because it is to structured. It is so planned out that these are the courses that you need to take and that is it, especially in education there is minimal room for electives. I would love to take classes on a little bit of everything, but unfortunately school is expensive and I need to graduate and make money. Our lives are so focused around making money.
My second major used to be math, but last semester I changed it to English. I know that we are in need of math and science teachers, but I just found it to be so dry. I needed a change. Last semester I took American Lit I and found it to be so interesting. We read Emily Dickinson, and I found not only her poems but her life to be incredibly interesting. We also read Ralph Waldo Emerson's "Self Reliance" and Henry David Thoreau's "Walden." The way that my professor shed insight into these works of literature inspired me so much. They made me think. I look at life differently after having read these works. Now, one day I want to write a book. I want to write something that can inspire other people. I think that everyone should take courses that will spark their interest like this. I know it is hard, but this is exactly the kind of education that students should be receiving.
