After reading the Instructional Strategies part of section three of the Big Assignment, I found a lot of similarities between the tips listed and tips usually given for teachers of special ed students. Both strategies tell teachers to speak slowly and clearly. Both strategies tells teachers to write clearly. Both of these strategies would help both special ed students and ELL students to understand directions better. Both strategies suggest using a routine for the classroom. Students with special needs, need routine so that things don't surprise them. My family takes in foster children and right now we have a 18 year old girl with down syndrome. She always needs a schedule. If something happens other then what she thinks is going to happen, she becomes very agitated. The same thing would happen with ELL students. Because they don't know the language well, when something happens out of the ordinary it might make them nervous. Both strategies suggest writing down directions and also speaking them. Writing down directions can make them clearer to both special ed students and ELL students. Special ed students might understand and be able to pay more attention to written directions. ELL students might be able to comprehend the directions if they are written down. Just like when we are learning a new language, it is always easier to read it then to speak it.
Clearly there are similarities between the way you teach special ed students and the ways you teach ELL students.
