Teaching the ESL student

I found this website that gave some real good suggestions for teachers who have ESL students in their class. The article includes some ways a teacher can make a student feel more welcomed in the classroom. One of the tips includes keeping track of the students language progress. While I was reading chapter 5 of the handouts that were given, I realized that there are many ways a teacher can asses an ESL students progress. A great assessment tool would be to use an audio/video tape. Taping a students conversation during certain points of the semester is a great way to asses their language development.

This was a great website to find out ways for a student to feel welcomed in their class. I did my 20 hours of observation in a kindergarten class in Union and there was a new child who just recently moved from another country (I don't recall which one) but spoke French. She was not put into a class like ESL because no one in the school spoke French. Her teacher knew a couple of words but this child was lost the entire day, weeks and months that went by. I felt so bad for her because she seems so completely lost and helpless. She would follow the other children in her group but she didn't understand what was going on. She is a bright little girl and you could see that she was determined to learn but the speech was holding her back. This site gave me great ways that would help to assess her in what she is learning and I will go back and tell the teacher what I read about that would help.
