Wondering About Evaluations by Your Supervisors?
Tomorrow morning I am being evaluated by my supervisor. All week long I have been working with the students and feeling extremely comfortable with them. However, I am a little nervous about being observed and evaluated because I know that someone is watching and waiting to critique me. I know that her criticism is only going to help me and meant for me to improve. I am excited also though because I have formed such good relationships with my students and my teacher and I know everything is going to run smoothly, or at least I hope! I was just wondering if anyone else has been observed by their supervisors? If so, how do you think you did? Wish me luck!

Good luck Jillian, you will do great! I was nervous too the first time I got observed, but I survived it and so will you! Once you begin your lesson, the nervousness will go away. Remember that this is a learning experience for you, and you aren’t expected to know everything. The criticism your adviser may give you is only meant to help you, not hurt you. The more experience you get in front of the class, the less nervous you will be for your next observation- so don't hesitate to do a lesson whenever you have the opportunity. Have fun with your lesson!
I got observed today for the first time. I was extremely nervous beforehand, but just like Erin said, once I started I began to feel much better about it. My supervisor and I had a meeting immediately after my lesson. To my surprise, he was actually more interested in what I had to say about my own lesson than giving his own opinion. He did however, tell me what he felt I did really well and also what I could have done differently. He was not mean about it at all and I appreciated all he had to say. As a matter of fact, I jotted things down he said during the meeting so that I would remember them when putting together future lessons. I am being oberved again tomorrow. My supervisor wants to see a follow-up lesson to the one I did today. I feel much more confident about this one. I hope your lesson went well! I am sure it did. Try not to worry too much. We all cannot expect to be pros at this right away. It is a learning process. The more we do it, the better we will get!
I was observed a few days ago for the first time. I was very nervous, especially because I only received the material we were going over one class beforehand. Overall I think I did O.K. for my first time. The students seemed interested, and they understood the lesson. I am still being told that I have to develop my "teachers voice," but I think that will come with more focus, time, and practice, (hopefully). The supervisor and the cooperating teacher's evaluations that they give you are very important, but I am learning that one of the most important evaluations throughout this course are the ones that you give yourself. If you reflect on your lessons, it helps to find strengths and weaknesses. I am finding that some things that work for my cooperating teacher do not work in the exact same way for me. It's a definitely a learning experience.
Last semester during my junior field I was observed 3 times. My 1st observation I was so nervous, I didn't move, the first 3 minutes I was so freak out I don't remember what I said. Later, after those 3 minutes I was more relax and continued with my lesson. I blocked my mind that my supervisor was there, and is funny now !!!!!because the only complaint that my supervisor had was that I need to move around the classroom. Thank God!!! She likes my lesson. I was teaching "Los Numeros" in spanish. I had 6 differents activities. Supervisors knows when you are new in the classroom usually 1st observation, is a learning process and a way to know your students. I ok to be nervous but is much better to learn more about your students and material. Good luck to all on their 1st time observation!!!!!!!
I was observed many times last semester during my Junior Field. Don't worry. It will be a little nerve racking, but I'm sure everything will turn out well. I was definitely nervous while being observed, but I always pulled through and my professor thought I did very well. She did have one concern that I didn't talk loud enough, but she was very kind about it and offered to help me. The next time she came, she was so excited at how much better I had become at speaking loudly. If your professor has any criticisms or concerns, the best thing to do is practice and take any tips your professor offers you.
I was observed today for the first time and it went very well. I was extreamly nervous before hand even though I was prepared. What I did to survive was to completely block out the fact that someone was watching me and focused on the class. After a few minutes I was so invloved in the lesson that I forgot that I was being observed. My advice to anyone who has not been observed yet would be to have a good solid plan, reherse it and then stick to it. Good Luck!
Well, today was my first observation for Junior Field. I started a brand new project with them that I created. My cooperating teacher and I worked hard on this since my first day last week, and I felt really good about it. Until "he" walked into the room. All of my confidence went right out the window until one of the students asked me a question and brought me back. The rest of the class period went smoothly, but boy, did he notice I had a stumbling moment. My supervisor told me that he really couldn't critique anything else, so I left today feeling pretty okay. (But I still had a cheeseburger for dinner - I deserved it!!) I'm sure all of you will do really well. Good Luck!
I like that Kathi treated herself with a cheesburger because I treated myself by going to the mall. However, back to the topic of being observed...I was observed yesterday as well and it ran smoothly. I have been teaching the entire week and I was allowed to choose the class I felt the most comfortable with, therefore any nervousness I should have felt had gone out the window. I do think my students were more nervous than I was because they wanted to make sure they were participating and behaving well. I was so proud of them and their efforts. I recieved an excellent evaluation and believe it or not, it makes a huge difference as your preparing to become a future teacher. May the rest of your observations run just as well because we all deserve to experience the benefits of becoming great future educators.
I was observed for the first time last Wednesday. Interestingly enough my supervisor had already known my cooperating teacher. Apparently my cooperating teacher had taught my supervisor's son about ten years ago, but they still remembered each other quite well. I was incredible nervous when it came time for my lesson. Luckily I had taught a few lessons before this but I wasn't quite sure how the students would react to yet another visitor in the room. Things went fairly smooth, despite my tense nervous. My supervisor sat in the back of the room and I just tried to forget that he was there altogether. He was really nice when it was time to go over my evaluation. He of course started with the positive things and then made a few suggestions that I might improve upon. One of his main suggestions was to slow down the pace of my speech. I guess because I was a little nervous my speech pace was a little quick. Fortunately he was real understanding and he told me that if I wasn't a little nervous my first time being observed than something might be wrong. Another suggestion he made was in terms of wait time after asking a question. I guess I didn't give the students enough time to respond to my questions. This was really tough for me because the silence in between the time you ask a question and the time when the students' hands go up to respond can be really awkward. I will keep this constructive critism in the back of my mind and definteiy try and work on it next time I teach.
I remember being observed last year and feeling like it was going to be the end of the world. I was really nervous but my cooperating teacher and supervisor were very supportive and helpful. They understood that I had never been observed before and made me feel comfortable with being in front of the class. It turned out to be a great experience and the kids were wonderful too. I of course made some mistakes--like forgetting about a group of students outside the classroom--but my supervisor told me not to sweat it. Even though we plan things on happening one way, sometimes we can't help it when little things happen. The important thing is that we learn from our mistakes and move on.
Jillian, I'm sure you did fine. I did junior field last semester and I was nervous too because you don't know what to expect or what your advisory is looking for. I did junior field with preschoolers so my advisor was understanding with the lessons I prepared for them. He observed me twice and came for a final evaluation but didn't stay to observe. I was lucky I did well the first time so he only had to come back once more. Let us know how you did.
I got observed for the first time this past Thursday. I was not nervous about doing the lesson, I was actually nervous about being observed while doing the lesson. Every time I would give the students instructions I would see my supervisor writing down notes in her book. After my lesson we had a meeting about the lesson. I was pleased to hear that she liked my lesson, but she also gave me some suggestions that would help me in during future lessons. I try to have fun with the lessons that I do. I also try to remember that the suggestions that the supervisor gives is constructive criticism that will help with future lessons.
I was observed on Thursday for my second and final time. My supervisor and cooperating teacher told me that I have been doing quite well. My cooperating teacher gives me many little pointers and suggestions and has pointed out little things that I may want to work on correcting as a future teacher. However, my supervisor barely give me any feedback. He just has me read over the evaluation that he wrote while I was doing my lesson and asks me to sign it! I wish that he would've given me a little bit more feedback, but at least my cooperating teacher has been helpful!
