Yesterday at my school, Westminster Academy, they had multi-cultural day. It was really amazing to see how many different cultures were actually coming together in one community, and also in one school. The students wore their countries colors, different types of costumes, and had flags that represented their country. I noticed just how many students were from Puerto Rico, Columbia,Peru, Dominican Republic, Portugal, Haiti, India, China, and even England! It was also amazing to see all these students celebrating all their different cultures, but they were doing it as a whole!
I am in the seventh and eigth grade classrooms so I do not experience any ELL students. But the multi-culural day allowed me to see just how many students were coming from different countries. The whole day was filled with students embracing their cultures. They even had their parents come in to watch them perform many different dances and music from their cultures. Another perk was that the children brought in different types of food from their countries. The food was delicious! Overall, I think that having this day allows the children to embrace their cultures and show pride for their countries. It was really great to see! Just wondering if anyone else has experienced anything similar?

I remember the multi-cultural day in my school. It was such a great day. Everyone is proud of their cultures and are able to show them off. I was always interested in learning about other people's cultures. It is a great time to educate people in how we are all different and how each person's culture should be respected.
The school I am working at does not have a multicultural day. On the 31st, however, we do have something called history expo in which the students give presentations on something in a historical context. The students in my class are working on projects in which they describe their cultural background. The students had to do some family research in which they were to find where their ancestors immigrated from. Some of the kids really put a lot of effort into their projects. Some plan to bring in food from the countries their ancestor immigrated from, some brought in artifacts that their ancestors brought to the United States with them, and some people brought in their ancestors original passports that they used to come over to the U.S.. Some students couldn't really trace their exact heritage so they just picked a country and had to create a presentation providing a pretend first hand account of what it was like coming the United States. The kids really put a lot of effort into their projects so far and I am really looking forward to hearing the completed project on the 31st.
I am a little bit jealous Jillian because I wish the school where I am at in Elizabeth would have a multi-cultural day as well. Not only would I get to learn more about my students, but I think it would also open them up some more. Im glad you were there to experience that wonderful event.
The preschool where I'm doing my junior field incorporates the culture of their students in their curriculum. During the Chinese New Year the teacher asked one of the parents if she could come and talk about some of the Chinese customs. The parent wore a traditional Chinese outfit and brought in a Chinese dragon costume for the students to wear. They played traditional Chinese music for the students and explained to them the importance of their tradition. The teacher had a follow up lesson where she asked the students to draw a picture of the Chinese dragon.
I think that all schools should implement a "Multi-Cultural Day" in some way shape or form. In my high school, the Jerseyan History Club would hold one of these events. It was a day long festivity where you were allowed to leave one of your classes to go down and enjoy the festivities. There was food, music, dancing, displays, clothes, etc. It was a great way to see the different cultures that surround you amongst your own peers. I think that it is very important to know and understand the different cultures that surround you and all over the world. Multi-cultural days are definately a great way to celebrate this awareness!
I always love multicultural day in my HS. I was proud of my cultures as well as others, it was the time to be free and proud of our culture.
