I am working on Part three of the unit and am finding it to be very helpfull. In Part two there is a section that shows the stages of second language acquisition. I found this section interesting because it breaks down the English Language Learner into five stages which are preproduction, early production, speech emergence, intermediate fluency, and advanced fluency. I have the preproduction stage to be of most interest since I have not working with students in this stage. It offered tips for helping and teaching these students such as, using visuals and manipulatives, allow students to listen and observe, and to use cooperative learning and pair this student with a more advanced ELL. I think it is important for me to realize that a student in this stage needs to observe and listen rather than talk and participate in class discussion. For this stage I think it would be important to use books that the student could listen to while he or she follows along. It may also be important to make sure the student is listening to what is going on to class and is paying attention to his or her work. This may be difficult for the mainstream teacher since the student may not be able to contribute to the class.
Overall I find this section to be helpfull because it gives the teacher the different stages as well as ways to teach the ELL students. And it also helps the teacher evaluate what level a ELL student may be at.
