erica's first blog post
hello! okay so I am doing my junior field currently and I am terrified. Talking in front of the classroom and having the command voice overall is very difficult so far for me. The teacher who I am shadowing until June 4th seems very nice so far and she is all about me "jumping into the mix." Tonight when I go home I have to create my first lesson plan on My Sister's Keeper. The teacher has ripped out the ending of the novel so that other students do not spoil the ending to others, I thought that reading the ending as a class was a good idea specifically because we can all reflect together. I have students (about eight) who have not learned English as their first language, they were struggling a bit during today's discussion but I have to get to know them a bit more. I am excited to get to know all my students a bit more, the only thing I know for sure about them is that they are way too excited about the up-coming prom and that they think that because My Sister's Keeper does not have a movie or spark notes they will never get through it. So far so good. I need to go look up the New Jersey Core Curriculum standards so that my teacher will be impressed. On a side note coffee is really getting my through my day and I am so thankful for the Dunkin Donuts that is a block away from my school, try the iced blue berry coffee...its choice.

I definitely understand what you are saying when you say "the command voice." My cooperating teacher keeps saying, "have attitude," but honestly, I don't. I know I am going to have to work on that. Of course, I want to be a nice teacher, but I do not want the students to walk all over me. I think finding a balance between the two will be one of the biggest challenges for me.
I can relate with you on this issue. It's a bit difficult for me to "have attitude". I'm used to being nice and helpful. I also don't want students to walk all over me so I'm definitely going to have to work on that. We can help each other out :)
I had a hard time as well today with speaking up to my students. I think they were probably expecting a lot more from me and I might have let them down. Then again, it was only the first day. Hopefully by the end of the week we have all found our comfort zone.
I completely agree with you about having the command voice. I also find that a challenge for me because I do not want my students to walk all over me. I think it is really good that you got involved with the students already. I also "jumped into the mix", and felt that the students were really interested in what I had to say. It was a good feeling. It also sounds like the students who do not speak English as their first language might be a challenge but I think your up for it! I think that is also a good idea about the ending of the book, I've never seen a teacher do that. I think that will be a good experience for the students though. Sounds like your day was good overall, I know you will do great! Personally, I enjoy the iced coconut coffee, it is my favorite! Good luck!
I just wanted to update about the whole issue on being able to have attitude and the command voice. I had the opportunity to present a lesson to two 7th grade English classes yesterday and they went really well! I was a bit nervous at first, but when I got up there I felt better. I had the students' attention and did not encounter any classroom management problems. My cooperating teacher also told me that I did a good job and that I projected myself well. I just hope things go this well during my observations!
