Neck stretching

After seeing the pictures of the Chinese foot binding it made may also think of other customs that people practice. In a few African and Asian cultures multiple neck rings are worn usually to stretch the neck. A long neck is considered beautiful. The Kayan people from Asia start to put rings on girls as early as five years old. Gradually additional rings are added to their necks. They even wear metal rings around their calves. Each ring that is added to their neck elongates their neck. I was horrified to learn that the pain that these women must endure for the sake of beauty. Their collarbones are pushed down from the weight of the brass rings which stretch the neck muscles. Women who were these rings after many years may have pain and infections. I also read that a full stretched neck could go to 10-15” long. If a woman’s rings are removed someone would have to hold her neck up for her, or she could chock. It’s hard to understand this culture because of the pain that these women endure. When I learned of their pain and sacrifice these women go through I wondered why. In their culture a long neck is associated with beauty. It is part if their culture which is important to them.
