After going over that test today in class, I wanted to look at this video again. I was shocked at many of those statistics, and even more shocked at how many I knew absolutely nothing about. I cannot believe that only 5% of rape or attempted rape victims report the crime. I also can't believe that ONLY 3 out of every 1000 employees in a Fortune 1000 company are Asian. Furthermore, in this video, there are many other facts that I just can't get over. For instance, one in Eight married couples met online. When I was a child, which was not long ago because I am 20, the internet was nothing like it is today. Many of my friends did not even have it until we reached high school. Now, people are marrying people they meet off of it. Who would have thought? Also, if myspace were a country it would be the 11th largest. This also shows how far the internet has come over the past decade or so. This statistic is more believable for me, because I have a myspace account. When I first signed up I think there were approx 58 MILLION users. When this video was made it states there were 106 MILLION users. I just checked now, and there are OVER 179 MILLION users. All of these were incredible and surprising statistics.

Hi Krista,
I was pretty amazed at the statistics as well. I think one of the only questions I was sure about was the one dealing with single mothers and education rates. Two of my friends were raised in a single mother household and they have by far surpassed me with their education. I am trying to keep up but their motivation and drive was instilled at a very early age and I think that both their mothers told them that they need to depend on themselves first and foremost; this is a valuable lesson for all of us!

I was also very surprised by the statistics from the quiz we took. I have to say that some of the answers were just shocking. I was particularly disappointed to find out that 53% of school staff and faculty has made homophobic remarks towards students. As a future educator I think it's our responsibility to set a positive example to other students. It's disappointing to learn that so many teachers make negative comments about their students.

One of the questions in the test that got me thinking was the one about how 61% of public school students are white, but 87% of teachers are white. After going back over the test, I thought about what the ratio was in the school I am teaching at. It is a small school, and therefore easier to determine the makeup of the staff, and what I found was amazing. Every teacher in the entire school, every administrative member, and every substitute that I saw, was white, with the exception of one spanish teacher who was Hispanic. The fact that there is one minority teacher in the whole school was startling, and made me think about the minority students. The school is mostly white, but has a significant amount, maybe 30%, of minorities. It must be hard for these students to go through school wanting to succeed without any teachers they can look up to as a role model that belongs to their same group.
