Everybody Loves Baseball!
Every year I organize a group trip to a Somerset Patriots Baseball Game for my daughter's elementary school. This year, because of this class, I had English printed on one side and Spanish on the other. I received so many more responses than I every would have thought possible! I had no idea how many Spanish-speaking families we had in our school and I am so glad that I did this to include them. This class is such an eye-opener for me. I can only imagine how many fun opportunities some of these families missed out on - especially if it was from a language issue.

That sounds like such a great idea, Kathi! It is amazing how much of an "eye-opener" this class is! That's kind of sad that these families had to miss out on opportunities because of a language barrier. However, you did such a nice thing for these families and they can now feel included! What a great way to reach out to them!
I definitely agree that this class had made me think alot. I'm not going to lie, I was not excited about this class at all. However, it has made me realize that as much as I previously did not want to teach ELL students, they probably don't want to be ELL students either. Since starting this class it has made me much more sensitive to what they go through and how I can help to make things easier for them and make them feel more comfortable in school. Now I honestly do want to help them. It may not always be easy but I think helping them will be very rewarding
Printing handouts in both English and Spanish should become a regular thing in schools. So many families speak Spanish now, that this language should be included. If we only hand out notices in English, it will be like we are only trying to get the attention of English-speaking families.
