Chapter One Side Note

I was reading through Chapter One and one of the side notes interested me. The note said, "Reflect and then describe one instance in which you made a difference in the life of one student." Two years ago while working in a daycare, there was this girl who never spoke to anyone. She was a three year old who only spoke Chinese. She never played with the other students or with the teachers. Most of the time, she just sat in a corner quietly.
I decided to try to get her to interact more. I started paying more attention to her and talking to her. Soon she was sitting next to me everyday and after a couple of weeks she began to talk to me a little and respond to my questions. Three months later, she was speaking full sentences to everyone, playing with the other children, shouting and running with the students outside, and teaching me a few Chinese words. Her mom came up to me one day and thanked me for paying attention to her daughter and helping to open her up and make her more outgoing. Her mother also said that she always talked about home how much fun Ms. Kristen was. It made me feel like I made a difference to her.

Sometimes Kristen just that little bit of attention that we give our students can go a really long way. I'm glad you were able to make such an impact on this child's life.
